The nephew of a Trainspotting 2 actor who was shot dead just yards from his Edinburgh home has described him as someone who was "remarkable".

Bradley Welsh was murdered in a stairwell as he was heading into his basement flat to see his partner and daughter on Chester Street at 8pm on Wednesday.

A neighbour tried to save the boxer's life but he was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot in the head.

Mr Welsh's nephew Jake said his heart has been left broken following the murder.

He said: "I am totally overwhelmed by everyone's kind words and amazing acts of kindness.

"The impact my uncle Brad has had on people's lives really is remarkable.

"I could write about you forever and a day mate.

"You brought the best out in me, you taught me so much and we shared some amazing memories.

"I will miss you forever."

Mr Welsh starred alongside Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, and Robert Carlyle in T2 Trainspotting, playing the gangland figure Mr Doyle.

The dad was targeted after leaving the Holyrood Boxing Gym, which he founded.

Officers are hunting the gunman but believe other people were involved in the planning of the shooting.

The gym said it has remained open for its "beloved coach" following the murder.

A message to users said: "He was our coach, friend, brother and to young Eva and Jack he was a dad so as a family we request you try your best to come and train as much as you can."

Superintendent Allan Burton said his family have been left devastated.

He said: "His partner and young daughter were in the home and they are totally devastated and distraught. It seems unreal for them what has occurred.

"They had no indication what has happened, particularly on their doorstep.

"They are just really suffering and finding it really difficult to cope with their loss of their partner and father.

"All of Mr Welsh's past will be looked at, his association, his friendships, his business contacts and people through his gym.

"We will find out who is responsible and we will bring them to justice."

Superintendent Allan Burton added: "A loud bang was heard and a male was seen running away from the top of the stairwell.

"A neighbour went to assist and discovered he had been shot.

"We are treating this as murder because he had gunshot injuries.

"I'm determined to find out who was involved.

"One person was seen running from the scene.

"There will be a motive - you don't shoot someone for nothing.

"We have not recovered any weapons."

He added: "I want to once again convey my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Bradley Welsh and reiterate my commitment to bringing those responsible for his murder to justice.

"Someone out there will know who committed this crime and I want you to search your conscience and do the right thing.

"A family are grieving for the loss of their son, brother, partner and father and they need answers.

"If you can help with this investigation then please contact us immediately.

"I also want to emphasise to the communities of Edinburgh that this incident is being treated as a targeted attack and murders, especially those involving a firearm remain extremely rare.

"The capital remains a safe place to live, work and visit and while this investigation continues, uniformed officers will maintain a high-visibility presence in the Chester Street and the West End to offer reassurance and engage with local residents and business staff."
