A second man has been arrested and released in connection with the murder of Trainspotting 2 actor Bradley Welsh.

Mr Welsh, 48, was shot dead in a stairwell as he was heading into his basement flat to see his partner and daughter on Chester Street, Edinburgh, at 8pm last Wednesday.

A neighbour tried to save his life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said on Tuesday an arrest had been made over the death, but the suspect was released pending further enquiries.

On Wednesday, police confirmed a second man had been arrested and subsequently released pending more information.

The force said: "Police in Edinburgh can confirm that a second man has been arrested in connection with the murder of 48-year-old Bradley Welsh.

"The incident happened around 8pm on Wednesday, April 17, in Chester Street.

"This second man has been released pending further inquiries.

"This investigation is ongoing and officers are continuing to appeal for information."

Mr Welsh starred alongside Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle in T2 Trainspotting, playing the gangland figure Mr Doyle.

Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh paid tribute to his "beautiful friend" on Twitter following news of Mr Welsh's death, adding: "Thanks for making me a better person and helping me to see the world in a kinder and wiser way."

Mr Welsh was targeted after leaving Holyrood Boxing Gym, which he founded.

On Saturday, the gym reopened its doors to a whole host of people who were "ready to pay their respects" by training in Mr Welsh's name.

A spokesperson from the gym said there were "a lot of faces - friends, boxers, trainers, spectators and regular class goers - yes there were tears".

Mr Welsh's family have left devastated over the murder.

Superintendent Allan Burton said: "His partner and young daughter were in the home and they are totally devastated and distraught. It seems unreal for them what has occurred.

"They had no indication what has happened, particularly on their doorstep.

"They are just really suffering and finding it really difficult to cope with their loss of their partner and father."

Mr Welsh's nephew Jake also said his heart had been left broken following the murder.

Paying tribute online, he posted: "I am totally overwhelmed by everyone's kind words and amazing acts of kindness.

"The impact my uncle Brad has had on people's lives really is remarkable.
