Though his stints hosting the Golden Globes have always been controversial, Ricky Gervais managed to offend many hours before they even began after posting a topless selfie with a foul-mouthed message.

Posting on Facebook, the British comedian offered up an unflattering image of the kind which will be familiar to those who follow him on social media.

However, many were less than amused by the tagline, which read: "Better get dressed and offend some humourless c I suppose. #GoldenGlobes"

The post received a mixed response, with one woman complaining: "You are funny and clever but it offends me and i wish you wouldnt use that silly horrid street talk word."

Another wrote: "Love you Ricky but the C word does not cut it."

Gervais is known for sticking the knife into fellow celebrities at the ceremony, and promised to "bite the hand that feeds me" yet again as he returns for his fourth stint as master of ceremonies.

Among a number of previous gags to have raised eyebrows in his 2010-2012 hosting role was one about Mel Gibson, who has publicly admitted a battle with alcohol addiction in the past.

Introducing the Australian actor, Gervais said: "I like a drink as much as the next man ... unless the next man is Mel Gibson."
