A Twitter mix-up has led to Super Mario Bros actor Bob Hoskins dying for a second time.

The much-loved actor died two years ago, but people on Twitter appear to believe Hoskins has become another of 2016's celebrity victims.

Tributes to Hoskins began trending on Twitter and the 2014 news story about the actor's death became the sixth most read story on the ITV News website, and the second most read story on the BBC.

Several fans paid tribute (again) to the actor on the social media site.

Margret Best wrote: "Saddened to hear of the passing of Bob Hoskins. Such a versatile actor and humble man. #RIPBobHoskins."

Actor Charlie Lawson tweeted: "Never a 'celebrity', Bob Hoskins was a great actor. First met him at The Roundhouse. A good man and great fun RIP."

Hoskins, who starred in films including The Long Good Friday and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, was a star of TV and cinema.

He retired in 2012 after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and died of pneumonia on April 29 2014

Hoskins' wife Linda and children Alex, Sarah, Rosa and Jack said at the time: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Bob."

It's not clear how the confusion over his death came about, but it's a good excuse to remember a great man again.
