Tom Hanks has paid an emotional tribute to his mother, who died aged 84.

The double Oscar-winning actor shared a portrait of his mother, Janet Marylyn Frager, on Instagram and said: "This beauty? She's my mom. She was the difference in many lives. Many lives. We say goodbye to her today. Safe crossing."

Mr Hanks celebrated his 60th birthday on Saturday, also posted a picture of the State Theatre in Red Bluff, California.

He added: "Saw so many movies here with our Mom".

His wife, Rita Wilson, also took to social media to pay tribute to Ms Frager, and said: "Thank you for bringing my love into the world. She is at peace now."

In May, Mr Hanks broke down in tears discussing his childhood, after he went to live with his father following his parents divorce.

The Hollywood star, along with his siblings Larry and Sarah, stayed in 10 houses in five years with his father, while his younger brother Jim lived with their mother.
