Taylor Swift has accused Kanye West and his wife Kim Kardashian of "character assassination".

It comes after the release of a video recording of a phone conversation in which Swift appears to approve the majority of a line from the rapper's controversial song "Famous".

What's the beef?

In the song, West raps: "For all my Southside n****s that know me best, I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b***h famous.

After its release, the song was heavily criticised for what some considered as misogynistic lyrics. A spokesman for Swift also said she was never made aware of the actual lyric concerning her.

Swift heard referring to some lyrics as a "compliment"

In response to the continued fallout over the song, reality star Kim, uploaded several Snapchat videos of Kanye reading out a portion of lyrics to Taylor, but not the specific line "I made that bitch famous".

Taylor is heard saying: "Yeah go with whatever line you think is better. It's obviously very tongue in cheek either way. And I really appreciate you telling me about it, that's really nice."

Taylor denies approving 'that b*h' lyrics

Taylor then released a statement, in response to being "falsely painted as a liar".

"Where in the video of Kanye telling me he was going to call me 'that bitch' in his song? It doesn't exist because it never happened."

Swift also said West had promised to play the song for her but "he never did".

The latest twist in a fractious relationship

Swift and West's relationship has been contentious since the hip-hop star infamous interruption of the singer's acceptance speech as the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

However, in recent years the pair appeared to be on better terms and even embraced when Swift presented the rapper with an award at the same awards show six years later.

But now the title of one of Taylor's smash hits, "We are never ever getting back together" may sum up the likelihood of any future friendly relationship, and this row looks set to continue.
