David Huddleston, who starred as The Big Lebowski, has died aged 85.

Huddleston, who also played the title role in Santa Claus: The Movie, had been suffering from advanced heart and kidney disease, his wife said.

He most famously portrayed the blustery millionaire whose identity Jeff Bridges' character is mistaken for in the 1998 cult comedy The Big Lebowski.

His other roles during his 55-year career included the mayor in Blazing Saddles and TV appearances on shows including 'The West Wing and 'Gilmore Girls.

Huddleston died in Santa Fe, New Mexico, his wife Sarah Koeppe said.

He was born in 1930 in Vinton, Virginia, and served as an aircraft engine mechanic in the US Air Force before studying acting in New York and beginning his career in theatre.
