A statue of much-loved comedian Victoria Wood will be built in her home town.

Wood died of cancer in April aged 62.

Her brother, Chris Fonte Wood, has called for a public tribute to his sister in her hometown Bury and launched a crowdfunding page to raise £20,000 for a memorial statue.

The statue has now been approved by the leader of Bury Council, who said it would be a "fitting tribute" to a "national treasure".

The council confirmed it will not be paying for it but will assist in efforts to find a sculptor and maintaining the statue after it is built.

Mr Wood has so far raised more than £6,000.

Although she was born in Prestwich, Lancashire, Wood's family home was in Bury where she lived until leaving for university at the age of 18.
