Katy Perry made Twitter history as she became the first person ever to collect 100 million followers.

The singer beat off competition rivals ranging from fellow pop stars to former world leaders to hit the milestone.

She was congratulated in a post from the official Twitter account.

Following close behind her is singer Justin Bieber, with 96.8 million followers and former US president Barack Obama with 90.9.

Perry's supposed rival Taylor Swift is on 85.1m.

Meanwhile, another of Twitter's most famous personalities, Donald Trump, has a relatively paltry 32.5m.

However, there has been controversy over how many of Perry's followers are real.

An audit of her audience using the an online tool found that only around a third are real people, meaning the vast majority are robots or fake accounts.
