A Harry Potter holiday tour allowing fans to tour Scottish locations made famous by the books and films has been launched.

The online guide has been created by VisitScotland to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first of JK Rowling's seven bestsellers about the boy wizard. It was published on June 26, 1997.

Using the itinerary, fans can take a four-day tour of Scotland, starting in Edinburgh, where Rowling wrote the first and last novels in the series, and finishing at Glen Coe in the Highlands, the backdrop to the movies The Prisoner of Azkaban and The Goblet of Fire.

The tour will include a trip on the Jacobite Steam Train, the real-life Hogwarts Express seen crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct on the West Highland Line in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The itinerary also includes two stops in Edinburgh: The Elephant House coffee shop where Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was written; and The Balmoral hotel where Rowling penned The Deathly Hallow, the final book of the series.

It also takes in locations in the Highlands including Rannoch moor, where Death Eaters board the movie Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1, and Loch Shiel, which doubles for the black lake in the film series.

Fans can also visit the Steall Falls in Glen Nevis that features in The Goblet of Fire, when Harry faces down a Hungarian horntail dragon in the triwizard tournament, and Glencoe's Clachaig Inn, next door to the site of Hagrid's Hut in The Prisoner of Azkaban.

Jenni Steele, film and creative industries manager at VisitScotland, said: "Harry Potter is a truly global phenomenon that has brought joy to millions of people of all ages over the last two decades.

"As 'the birthplace of Harry Potter', Scotland boasts numerous locations associated with the bestselling books and the blockbuster movies.

"Our handy new online itinerary allows fans to follow in the footsteps of JK Rowling as well as the boy wizard himself and enjoy a magical tour of Scotland."
