American film director Kevin Smith, known for hits such as Mallrats, has revealed he suffered a "massive heart attack".

He tweeted a photograph of himself in a hospital bed, writing alongside it: "After the first show this evening, I had a massive heart attack. The Doctor who saved my life told me I had 100% blockage of my LAD artery (aka "the Widow-Maker").

"If I hadn't cancelled show two to go to the hospital, I would've died tonight. But for now, I'm still above ground!"

The actor, known for one half of the duo Jay and Silent Bob, was performing an improv show in Los Angeles at the time.
