The Proclaimers have made no secret of how proud they are of their roots in the Scottish capital.

Now they have professed their love for Edinburgh to the world in a new single, Streets of Edinburgh.

The accompanying video has sparked worldwide interest because of its scenic shots of the city and its residents, but the much-loved duo told STV News they wanted to give an honest picture of modern Edinburgh, and so they included the good with the bad.

"We were keen to show both sides - we wanted to show a good variety, not just Greyfriars Bobby and Edinburgh Castle," they said.

"We wanted to show a variety of the city itself and the people who live in it."

Twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid have been associated with the city since the start of their musical careers, and the city feels just as passionate about them.

Sunshine on Leith is an unofficial anthem for their beloved Hibs football team, and the pair are still based in the city.

Although the song celebrates the city as a whole, the less positive sides of Edinburgh's streets appeared in the lyrics - from the cracked pavements to the infamous potholes.

"I wanted to get a song that wasn't overly sentimental and had a critical side of the city as well," they continued.

"It's the place we call home - we've lived most of our lives here, we wanted to do it justice."

Director Rianne White filmed in early mornings and late at night to capture the quieter moments away from the Edinburgh Festival, from the city's green spaces to Leith landmarks and the iconic Old Town.

"I think it would be hard to get a bad video out of Edinburgh scenes but Rianne did a really good job," they added.

"I think our favourite element is definitely the boy dancing at the end."

The siblings are currently playing a sell-out UK tour of their new album, Angry Cyclist, before continuing on a coast-to-coast 13-date tour of Canada.
