A feature documentary about the Grand Theft Auto video game franchise is in the works.

UK production outfit Salon Pictures is behind the feature, titled The Billion Dollar Game.

Sales agent Independent has boarded the project and will be introducing it to buyers at this year's American Film Market.

Filming is now under way, with the documentary - directed by Rob Ryan - expected to combine archive and new interview footage.

Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is a computer game series originally created by David Jones and Mike Dailly for Scotland-based games developer DMA Design, which later became Rockstar North.

Rockstar North, based in Edinburgh, primarily develops the game before it is published by parent company Rockstar Games.

At present, the film is not affiliated with Rockstar Games.

In total, the GTA franchise has sold more than 235 million units worldwide.

Within 24 hours of its release in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V generated more than $800m in worldwide revenue. The numbers nearly doubled analysts' expectations for the title.

Three days after release, the game had surpassed $1bn in sales, making it the fastest selling entertainment product in history.

Each game in the series allows the player to take on the role of a criminal in a fictional city, typically an individual who plans to rise through the ranks of organised crime through the course of the story.

The player is given various missions by kingpins and other major idols in the city underworld. Assassinations and other violent crimes are featured regularly.

According to Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2008 and 2009, it is the most controversial video game series in history, with accusations of glamorising violence, corrupting gamers, and connection to real life crimes.
