A man who died after falling from a canoe into a Highland river has been identified by police.

Petrus Janse Van Rensburg, 36, plunged into the River Garry while canoeing with an 18-year-old relative on Thursday.

Both men were airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, where Mr Van Rensburg later died. The  younger man was later released from hospital.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Emergency services were called at the River Garry, near Invergarry, after receiving a report of two men in difficulty on the river at around 12.28pm on December 31.

"Two men were reported to have gone into the water after falling from a canoe. Both men were taken to Raigmore Hospital for treatment but sadly one of the men died.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
