Drivers are being warned to expect travel delays as ice and snow warnings have been issued throughout Scotland.

The Met Office has issued six yellow ice warnings and nine yellow snow warnings in Strathclyde, Central Scotland, throughout the Highlands and Islands, Shetland and Orkney, Grampian, Tayside and Fife.

The cold temperatures are expected to affect roads throughout Wednesday morning with up to 8cm of snow expected in some places.

Police in Stirling warned drivers about ice on the A875 junction of the A81 at Drumgoyne.

Fresh snowfall was also reported on the A9 at Ousedale near Helmsdale in the north Highlands.

STV weather presenter Seán Batty said: "It’ll be another day with sunshine and scattered wintry showers north of a line Fort William to Aberdeen. The showers could lead to another few centimetres of snow in some areas.

"Road surface temperatures should be above freezing Wednesday afternoon, although as temperatures fall in the evening ice is likely to form again.

"We could see some very low temperatures tonight, especially in snow covered glens of the north around Wester Ross. Temperatures could also get particularly low across Deeside and through Glen Clova, Glen Doll and around Glenshee. Lows in the region of -5C to -10C can be expected.

"Later tonight heavy wintry showers will move slowly south across Shetland. Given the showery nature snow depth will vary widely, although some of the worst affected areas could see up to 10 cm.

"Thursday morning will again be icy, especially where there have been some overnight showers.

"The weather is set to stay cold and frosty, but with plenty of sunshine as we head into the weekend. There is still a risk of occasional wintry showers with the highest risk across the Northern Isles and the north east mainland."
