A jacket belonging to a man missing for more than a week has been found in the Highlands.

Jason Gates, who was last seen in the Aviemore area on March 12, was reported missing on Thursday.

The 36-year-old, from Hampshire may have been spotted in Drumnadrochit three days earlier and police are pursuing a second possible sighting on the Great Glen Way on Sunday.

His jacket was found west of Drumnadrochit, near where Mr Gates’ dog Max was found on March 15.

The spaniel is believed to have been responsible for the deaths of three sheep before he was handed over to Police Scotland last Tuesday.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police have received a number of calls from members of the public with information to assist the search effort.

“A possible sighting of Jason is being investigated following a report that a man matching Jason’s description was seen on the Great Glen Way, near the Abriachan woodlands car park, on Sunday afternoon.

“Officers are in daily contact with Jason’s family.”

Mr Gates is around 6ft 3in tall, with short grey hair. He is thought to have wearing dark clothing and walking boots when he vanished.
