Heavy snow and icy conditions are expected to continue into the weekend as further severe weather warnings are issued.

The Met Office has warned of wintry weather in parts of the Highlands, Western Isles, Grampian and Tayside on Friday and Saturday.

Up to 5cm of snow is expected to fall on high ground, with 2cm possible in lower lying areas.

Traffic Scotland has urged drivers to take extra care on the roads this weekend.

A Met Office forecaster said: "Wintry showers will continue on Friday evening, overnight and into Saturday morning.

"As road temperatures fall tonight, snow will be more likely to settle on roads and pavements. 2-5 cm is likely on ground above 200m with 1-2 cm possible even to lower levels inland.

"In addition, icy stretches are likely to form in the clearer spells between the showers. As temperatures rise on Saturday morning lying snow will melt."
