A flotilla of 30 fishing boats led the search for Mr Allison around the islands of Mingulay, Sandray, Berneray and Pabbay on Thursday, while 130 people scoured the shoreline.

Fishermen travelled from across the Western Isles to join the search.

Further land searches are planned for Saturday with volunteers wishing to assist requested to attend at two allocated meeting points at 9:00am at Ludag Pier, South Uist and Castlebay Hall, Barra.

Police reminded anyone joining the search to wear suitable footwear and warm waterproof clothing.
