The funeral of one of the men who died when a fishing boat sank off the Western Isles has taken place.

Mourners gathered on Saturday at Scarista Church to say their final goodbyes to Chris Morrison before the 27-year-old was laid to rest at Borve Cemetery on Harris.

He was one of two men who died when the Louisa sank near Mingulay a week ago, with skipper Paul Alliston still missing.

A fourth crew member, Lachlan Armstrong, was rescued after clinging to some rocks.

Locals have pulled together to support Mr Morrison's family, with more than 400 well-wishers raising over £11,000.

Reverend David Donaldson, who led the service, said: "I just feel everyone's really quiet right now, and I feel quite quiet myself.

"It's just an unspoken sadness. It's a very close-knit community and it's affected everybody."

"It's marvellous the way people have rallied around and supported the families.

"Everyone involved in it. It just is absolutely typical of people in the Western Isles that they look after one another, a great community of people, and it's symbolic of what's happened this week."

Martin Johnstone, 29, from Caithness, also died in the tragedy last Saturday.

Mr Morrison's funeral took place as the search for missing Mr Alliston, 42, from Lewis, continued.

Islands locals turned out in force as they scoured the vast coastline for any trace of the skipper, who was last seen swimming to shore.

Teams concentrated their effort around the island of Mingulay, where the boat itself sank, and nearby Sandray, Berneray and Pabbay.

Police say they have been overwhelmed by the "tremendous" response from the public.

On Saturday the moderator of the Church of Scotland offered his prayers for the men lost, as he revealed one of the victims was a relative.

Rt Rev Dr Angus Morrison, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, said: "It was with a sense of shock and sadness that I learned of the sinking of the Louisa off Mingulay, with tragic loss of life.

"Since then, my thoughts and prayers, as those of us all in the Church of Scotland, have been with the families of those who lost their lives, and with Lachlan the sole survivor.

"For me the sadness of this event has a very personal element, as one of the crew lost, Chris Morrison, was a relative. Chris will be laid to rest in his native Harris today."

Mr Morrison was the grandson of the moderator's cousin.

The moderator added: "Island communities are no strangers to tragedies at sea.

"One of the great strengths of these communities, however, is the way in which they come together to support one another, especially at difficult times such as this.

"I know that in every community of the Western Isles people will be grieving with and praying for the bereaved families. Such solidarity will help mitigate the pain and grief."
