Firefighters have tackled a wildfire which has destroyed 30 acres of land on Skye.

Twenty crew members were sent to the incident three miles south of Portree at 1.45pm on Tuesday.

Teams from seven stations worked in shifts for eight hours to bring the fire under control.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) described the incident as "physically demanding".

He added: "We work closely with land managers and communities to reduce the number of wildfires in a bid to protect the countryside and its residents from the incidents, which tie up emergency resources and can cause significant environmental and economic damage.

"Livestock, farmland, wildlife, protected woodland and sites of special scientific interest can all be devastated by the fires, as can the lives of people living and working in rural communities.

"The public can help prevent wildfires by making sure they dispose of litter and smoking materials carefully while in rural areas."
