Almost half of the Caledonian MacBrayne network now has free public Wi-Fi, with the remainder to be connected by early July, the ferry operator has announced.

The first vessel to go live was MV Bute on the Wemyss Bay to Rothesay route in February 2015, with Rothesay the first port to benefit.

In total, 88 hotspots will be installed across the firm's fleet and port facilities.

CalMac said the connectivity would benefit both business travellers and tourists as there was previously little provision across most of the network.

Although all vessels will be on the network, the firm warned there will be interruptions at some points when ferries cross wide stretches of open water.

Project manager Jim McKillop said: "Already we have had some great feedback from communities involved and we are committed to roll out completion by early July.

"I'd like to thank everyone for their patience throughout this project - we're under no illusion about the frustration with some of the delays which have occurred.

"But we are confident that the service which is being put in place is something which will be of significant benefit to communities and visitors alike."
