The stepfather of an Australian woman killed in Skye has thanked people for their "overwhelming" support.

Madison Rice, 21, was struck by a car while hitch-hiking on the A87 in the early hours of Monday morning.

She is believed to have been returning to the Kinloch Lodge in Sleat with her boyfriend Joe Perry when the collision happened.

The hotel worker had no travel insurance but her family has raised nearly $30,000 to bring her body home through fundraising website YouCaring.

Stepfather Alix Welsh told STV News: "The support has been overwhelming not only in Australia but abroad and from the people from Skye. It's very humbling for us all.

"I was only expecting [the fundraising campaign] to cover part of the cost but I'm hoping we've covered it all. I never expected this - words don't explain or express our gratitude enough."

Mr Welsh said his stepdaughter was "living her dream of travelling and working in the UK and loving life". He said her family and friends were "very lucky" to have had her in their lives.

Ms Rice also leaves behind her mother Kerry, father Stephen and her twin brother Harlan.

Mr Welsh added: "She was an amazing young lady."
