Gravestones have been pushed over and set alight at a cemetery in Inverness.

Nearly 40 markers at Tomnahurich Cemetery have been targeted in the last two weeks.

Police said the cost of repairing the damage is likely to total thousands of pounds.

A spokeswoman said: "Around 35 to 40 gravestones have been deliberately damaged, believed to have been pushed over and in some cases set alight.

"The damage amounts to several thousands of pounds and has taken place within the last two weeks.

"Enquiries are taking place locally with additional patrols of the area around the cemetery."
