A renowned killer whale who has swam Scottish waters for 25 years has been spotted by snorkelers.

Bull orca John Coe was caught on camera as he surfaced off the Isle of Coll in the Hebrides over the weekend.

The whale has been seen in the area since the early 90s and he is believed to be between 40 and 50 years old.

Basking Shark Scotland's Shane Wasik said: "We had an international group with us from who were all snorkelling with seals at the time.

"They must have got a fright as I was shouting at them to get back to the boat after spotting the huge dorsal fin from about a mile away.

"We quickly hauled anchor and headed off to find him. After he was spotted again, we stayed with him for about half an hour as he travelled north towards the Small Isles.

"As the population is so small and sightings so infrequent is was so special to see him in glorious conditions."

John Coe is part of a shrinking pod of orcas which mainly lives in the Hebrides but often travels between Britain and Ireland.

Lulu, one of the female members of the group, died after becoming tangled in fishing gear near the Isle of Tiree in January.
