A man has been airlifted to hospital after a dingy he was on capsized in the Highlands.

A coastguard helicopter and lifeboat teams were called out at around 8.45am on Monday off Fortrose in the Black Isle.

The man made it 600 metres back to shore but needed immediate medical attention and was flown to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for treatment.

A spokeswoman for the UK Coastguard said: "At approximately 8.45am today someone called the UK Coastguard to report that a dinghy had capsized 600 metres offshore and there were possibly two people in the water between Fortrose and the Creagan Rocks, Scotland.

"Inverness Coastguard Rescue Team, Kessock RNLI lifeboat and a UK Coastguard search and rescue helicopter were sent to assist. Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service were also in attendance.

"Arriving on scene, it was quickly established there was only one person in difficulties and that person had made it ashore and required immediate medical assistance.

"Although it was initially reported that two people were in the water, it became clear that a buoy in the water near the dinghy had been mistaken for another person. The casualty has been airlifted to Raigmore hospital by the Coastguard helicopter."
