A rapist threw a woman down a flight of stairs and locked her in a cupboard before carrying out a sex attack.

James Gilliard was also convicted of raping and attacking another woman at the end of a trial at Edinburgh High Court on Tuesday.

Gilliard, from Inverness, was found guilty by a jury of raping a 31-year-old woman at an address in Kirkcaldy, Fife, between March and June 2005.

Before sexually assaulting her, the 35-year-old threw her down a flight of stairs and locked her in a cupboard, the court heard.

The builder, who has previous convictions for assault and breach of the peace, was also convicted of raping a 35-year-old woman in Inverness between January 1, 2010, and February 28, 2010.

He had previously attacked her by repeatedly punching, slapping, kicking and striking her on the head and body.

Gilliard was also found guilty of committing a breach of the peace by shouting and swearing in Inverness in May last year.

Judge Lady Carmichael said: "Mr Gilliard, you have been convicted of a number of serious offences. I will defer sentence for the court to obtain a criminal justice social work report."

Defence solicitor advocate Iain Paterson told the court that he would reserve his mitigation until the sentencing hearing.

He added: "He accepts that these offences can only result in the imposition of a custodial term."

Gilliard will be sentenced at the Edinburgh High Court on August 16, 2016.
