Police Scotland is being investigated after an elderly man died hours after phoning officers.

The 72-year-old man died at a sheltered housing complex in Inverness last month.

It has emerged he called police in the hours before his death on Thursday, October 27.

Prosecutors have now ordered watchdog the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) to investigate the police over their response to the initial call.

A spokesman for the PIRC said: "The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has instructed the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC to undertake an investigation into the initial police response to a call from a 72-year-old man who was later found dead at a sheltered housing complex in Inverness on Thursday, October 27.

"A report on the commissioner's findings will be submitted to the COPFS in due course."
