The death of an elderly couple found outside their home on Lewis in freezing conditions is not being treated as suspicious.

Donald and Morag MacMillan's bodies were found outside their house at around 8am on Friday, leaving the local community in shock.

The couple ran the post office from their home in Gravir.

Police confirmed on Wednesday that there were no suspicious circumstances.

Detective inspector Richard Baird said: "The tragic and untimely deaths of Mr and Mrs MacMillan have understandably shaken the local and wider communities of the Western Isles and our sympathies extend to everyone who knew the popular and highly respected couple.

"Officers would like to thank members of the local community for their support and co-operation during the investigation."

Reports have been submitted to the procurator fiscal.

It is understood local officers attended following a report of just one casualty and were shocked to discover a second body nearby.

A major forensic examination was carried out in the garden after the discovery on Friday.

Morag, 67, was also known as Maureen and previously worked at the nearby primary school and was a care assistant for a neighbour.

The pair, who had no children, were were well known in the community for fundraising for local causes.
