Maternity care is will be overhauled at a Highland hospital where five babies have died since 2010.

At least two of the deaths at Caithness General Hospital were potentially avoidable, a recent inquiry found.

It concluded mothers would be safer if maternity care at the infirmary was led by midwives, supported by specialist doctors at Raigmore Hospital.

The board of NHS Highland agreed to implement its recommendations at a meeting on Tuesday.

Campaigners have raised concerns, however, about at-risk pregnant women being forced to make the 100-mile journey between Wick and Inverness.

The overhaul of Caithness General's maternity services is expected to be completed by early next year.
