An 85-year-old man is in a serious condition following a three-vehicle crash in the Highlands.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the collision on the A9 near Alness at 4.30pm on Thursday.

The pensioner, who is believed to have suffered leg injuries, was cut free from his BMW by firefighters.

Nobody else was injured in the crash, which also involved a Ford Transit Van and a Volkswagen Caddy van.

The A9 was closed near the Obsdale Road junction until 11.15pm while the vehicles were recovered.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police in Ross-shire are appealing for witnesses following a three vehicle collision on the A9 near Alness last night.

"The 85-year-old driver of the BMW was taken to Raigmore hospital in Inverness where he remains in a serious condition. No one else was injured.

"Local diversions were put in place, with the road opening again at 11.15pm."
