A man's body has been recovered from an address in Caithness after a fire ripped through a house.

The blaze was reported to emergency services shortly before 8pm on Wednesday, December 28.

The building in Scarfskerry was unsafe to enter for a number of days, however, due to extensive structural damage caused by the fire.

Formal identification of the body will now take place but the family of Frederick Melhert, 95, have been notified by police officers. Mr Melhert lived alone at the address.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Enquiries into the cause of the fire are continuing with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the full circumstances.

"However, there are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."
