A climber who died in a fall on one of the highest mountains in Scotland has been named.

Mark Bowling from Lancashire was descending from the summit of Aonach Beag, a 4048ft Munro at the north side of Glen Nevis near Fort William in the Highlands, with a friend.

Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team airlifted the 52-year-old from the side of the mountain on January 5 but he later died.

His companion was not injured in the incident in the late afternoon.

Mr Bowling's family said: "We are all completely heartbroken and in shock over the tragic loss of Mark. He was a loving husband and father who had a great love for the outdoors, mountaineering and photography.

"We are so proud of all he has achieved, we love and will miss him greatly. He leaves behind his wife, four children and his faithful dog."

Mr Bowling's family have requested privacy to grieve.
