A rally driver left fighting for his life after an alleged hit-and-run is recovering in hospital.

Steven Fraser was returning from a night out in Inverness after competing in the Snowman Rally when he was knocked down while crossing the Friars Bridge on the A82.

The father-of-two suffered multiple broken bones and liver damage in the crash on February 19.

He is now recovering at Raigmore Hospital and his family and friends have launched a fundraising campaign to support him while he gets better.

Friend and co-driver Rhuaridh Campbell said: "We were taking part in the Snowman Rally and we had to pull out in the last stage due to a broken shaft in the car but we had done well.

"Afterwards we got together with some friends to celebrate. We had a brilliant time."

After spending the night in Inverness Mr Steven, 36, and three friends called for a taxi.

"It couldn't pick them up from where they were and they had to cross the Friars Bridge to meet the taxi," Mr Campbell, who had left half an hour earlier, said.

"They were crossing the road and they heard bang, turned around and saw Steven in the road. He was in a life-threatening condition and he was taken to Raigmore.

"He was in intensive care for a quite a while but he's on the road to recovery now."

Two men from Inverness, Andre Sinzieanu and Dorian Savu, have been charged with offences including dangerous driving, drink-driving, driving without a licence or insurance and failing to stop after an accident.

They appeared in court on February 21 and made no plea.
