Firefighters have tackled two separate wildfires burning near Inverness.

Each of the blazes, which broke out between Torbreck and Essich on Sunday, was more than half a mile wide and the flames were fanned by high winds.

A total of 30 firefighters remained at the scene overnight along with six fire engines.

The fires were brought under control on Monday afternoon and the B861 between Inverness and Balnafoich reopened at around 2pm.

Firefighters are used beaters, water backpacks and high-powered hoses to suppress the fires, which spread across a square mile of grasslands.

The SFRS recently issued a warning following a series of wildfires in the Highlands.

Local senior officer John MacDonald said: "I'd like to praise the commitment and determination of our crews when faced with this significant wildfire as they worked tirelessly and under arduous conditions.

"As well as our whole-time crews, we are also extremely grateful to our retained crews who quickly responded and supported firefighting operations which have continued through the night.

"Their responsive actions highlight just how important our retained firefighters are - particularly in rural areas - where the risk of wild and grass fires is rife at this time of year."
