Western Isles councillor Bill Houston died suddenly at his home in Leurbost on Saturday morning.
The councillor for the Uig and North Lochs ward suffered a brain haemorrhage at the start of the 2012 local council election campaign but had appeared to be making a good recovery.
He stood on for the SNP in this May after taking early retirement as Director of Sustainable Communities at Western Isles Council.
Mr Houston had worked in local government in different areas of Scotland for 35 years.
He originally came to the islands in 1998 to take up the post of Deputy Director of Education and Leisure Services.
Mr Houston previously stood as a SNP parliamentary candidate for Stirling 1983 and in Falkirk in 1992.
Mr Houston is survived by two sons and a daughter.
