Highland roads see up to nine inches of snow cover as winter bites

Motorists in the Highlands are being advised to take care on the roads as winter weather continues to bite.

In the Ross and Cromarty area roads officials warned of deep drifting snow on the Applecross-Beallach road which has been closed. They said other routes were wet with icy patches at low levels.
Skye and Lochalsh routes pre-gritted on Wednesday but temperatures rose during the night resulting in heavy rainfall and in Sutherland and East Ross most routes are affected by slush or snow cover and icy patches.
Around Lochaber weather has been mixed with heavy rain on coastal routes with more snow in places.
Caithness and North Sutherland has also been hit by heavy rain and snow showers as temperatures stay above freezing. Most high routes have a cover of snow which is mainly wet, hard packed and slippery in places.
In the Badenoch and Strathspey area some routes are still affected by hard packed snow with high fresh winds causing slight drifting on the A939 Bridge of Brown.
At Inverness road crews are treating routes as freezing rain has been forecast.
Traffic Scotland was warning of “hazardous conditions” on the A890 Strathcarron to Stromeferry road due to ice.
A spokesman said: “Drivers are advised to use caution due to low temperature and the risk of ice currently affecting driving conditions.”
Highland Council reported no school closures across the region.
In Inverness temperatures will drop to -1C later on Thursday but in Fort William, Thurso and Lochinver temperatures should stay above freezing at around 2C.
