Ministry of Defence withdraws plans to buy land at Cape Wrath
The community in nearby Durness feared a MoD purchase would see it closed off to the public.
Residents of a far North community say they are delighted the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has withdrawn its plans to buy land surrounding iconic Cape Wrath.
Land around the lighthouse has been put up for sale but the community in nearby Durness feared a MoD purchase would see it closed off to the public, devastating the local tourist economy.
At the very north-west tip of the country, Cape Wrath is a destination for thousands of visitors each year, keen to see what's described as The Last Great Wilderness.
A spokesman for the Durness Development Group said it is waiting for a response from the Scottish Government as to whether a community buy-out could still be pursued.
He said a community consultation is also underway which will hopefully help shape the future for such an iconic destination.
