A construction worker has been killed during work on a new bridge over the River Don in Aberdeen.

Ian Walker, 58, died at the scene of the accident in the Danestone area at around 4.45pm on Wednesday.

Work at the site has been halted while the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) carries out an investigation.

It is unclear what caused the Dundee man's death.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Police Scotland were informed of an incident at a construction site in Danestone at 4.45pm on Wednesday where it had been reported that a man was injured.

"Sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene and his next of kin have been informed.

"Enquiries are at an early stage and further details will be released in due course."

The third Don crossing is the first bridge built in the Aberdeen in more than 30 years and is expected to improve traffic flow around the River Don.

The project includes the construction of more than a mile of roads either side of the river to facilitate the single-carriageway span between the Parkway and Tillydrone.

Contractors Balfour Beatty said it is unclear when construction will resume on the project - which is already running seven weeks behind.

They added: "Our deepest sympathies are with our colleague’s family, friends and co-workers at this time.

"We are liaising with Police Scotland and the HSE to support their investigations and while these continue it would not be appropriate to comment further."
