The construction of a new bridge over the River Don has restarted after the death of a worker.

Ian Walker, 58, died at the third Don crossing in the Danestone area of Aberdeen on Wednesday.

Work was temporarily halted while the Health and Safety Executive carried out an investigation into his death.

The bridge is expected to be completed in late spring, more than seven weeks later than scheduled.

A spokeswoman for contractors Balfour Beatty said: "Following a full briefing for all workers on site, Balfour Beatty can confirm that, with the exception of the area of the incident, works at the third Don crossing has resumed today after the tragic fatality which occurred on January 13.

"Works on the third Don crossing began in August 2014 and are due for completion in late spring 2016."

It is the first bridge built in the Aberdeen in more than 30 years and is expected to improve traffic flow around the River Don.

The project includes the construction of more than a mile of roads either side of the river to facilitate the single-carriageway span between the Parkway and Tillydrone.
