A teacher who suffered a brain aneurysm in Thailand is set to fly home to Scotland next week.

Owen Auskerry was flown to a private hospital in Bangkok after a series of seizures on January 13.

The 24-year-old from Orkney underwent brain surgery and is recovering in the Thai capital.

Despite the successful procedure, Mr Auskerry has had problems speaking, reading and writing.

He was left with no memory of spending the last year teaching English at a school in southern Thailand.

His mother, Teresa, said: "The new ultrasound showed low activity and the doctors think Owen will be fit to fly home next week.

"We have stressed how difficult the three flights are and the doctors are still saying that they are happy for him to fly. I am also reassured as the insurance company are going to pay for a nurse and I to accompany him in business class.

"I spent the afternoon at his school and many of the girls were crying when they saw the video he had recorded for them.

"His colleagues had written about him, saying: 'We like your set of values and sense of humour. The kind of values that the free world has fought for and the phrases make English such a powerful means of expression'."

Rising medical costs and concerns over his long-term care forced his family to turn to crowdfunding website GoFundMe for help.

The campaign has raised nearly £29,000, which will help pay for flights and medical costs. More than 850 people have contributed to the fund, including one anonymous donor who gave £5000.

Any money left over from Mr Auskerry's care will be donated to the charity of his choice, his family said.

Mr Auskerry's girlfriend Janjira first raised the alarm after the English teacher became unwell. His symptoms, which began as a severe headache and nausea, quickly became more serious.

He was initially taken to an infirmary from his home in Nakhon Si Thammarat before being flown 380 miles to hospital in Bangkok.

Mr Auskerry's parents flew out to Thailand on Friday and shortly afterwards he underwent a three-and-a-half hour long surgery on his brain. He woke up two days later.
