An 87-year-old motorist killed in a two-car collision in Aberdeen has been named by police.

Robert Thomson, known as Bob, died in the crash on the A96 near Tyrebagger on Friday evening.

The pensioner was behind the wheel of a blue Hyundai which collided with a red Mini Cooper at around 7.10pm.

A 61-year-old woman who was driving the Mini was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

Mr Thomson's family paid tribute to him in a statement issued by police.

They said: "Bob Thomson, formerly of Valley Crescent, recently moved to Fairley Den, Bucksburn, and was a Stevedore for 40 years at P&O Ferries.

"He was a prominent junior football player with Balgownie and Sunnybank FC.

"He was also a founder member of Triangle Table Tennis Club and latterly joined the Evergreens Table Tennis Group at Aberdeen Sports Village.

"He was a lifelong member of the Victoria/Northern Golf Club and was a caravan owner at Ballater for many years.

"He was a devoted husband of 64 years to the late Ethel Thomson and a loving family man."

Police Scotland sergeant Rob Warnock said: "My thoughts are with Mr Thomson's friends and family at this difficult time.

"I am appealing for any witness who may have seen this collision or anything that preceded it to contact Police Scotland on 101.

"I am particularly looking to trace a lorry driver that was travelling towards Aberdeen at the time of the incident and any other vehicles travelling west towards Blackburn, or who may have turned off onto the B979 towards Kirkton of Skene."
