People in Orkney are unable to make 999 calls from landlines because of a fault.

Officers became aware of the problem affecting the Longhope area of South Walls on Friday morning.

A spokeswoman said the cause of the problem is unclear but police aim to fix the issue by Friday evening.

She added: “It is hoped the system will be back up and running this evening.

“It is unclear what has caused the fault.”

Scotland's islands suffer from some of the worst mobile coverage in the UK, forcing many to rely on landlines.
