A pair of women have been rescued from the River Dee after their dingy capsized.

Emergency services were called when the boat overturned near Banchory in Aberdeenshire at 1.50pm on Thursday.

The two women were stranded on an island around 50ft from the bank, while a third swam to shore.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service water rescue team was dispatched from Elgin and carried the women safely off the river before handing them over to the ambulance service. They are not thought to have been harmed.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Around 1.50pm, we received a call from the ambulance service reporting that a boat had capsized and three people were in the water near Craiglug.

"We immediately sent our water rescue team from Elgin, joined by crews from Stonehaven and Banchory.

"Firefighters in a rescue boat deployed to the water and rescued two people from an island around 15 metres from the river bank. A third had already made it to safety prior to our arrival.

"All three have been passed to the care of the ambulance service."
