A major blaze is being battled by more than 50 firefighters at a furniture mill in Inverurie.

Three separate buildings at Lethenty Sawmill are engulfed by flames including a sawmill, a photography studio and a repair workshop.

Crews have been tackling the fire since 4.40am using five high-pressure jet hoses and two aerial rescue pumps.

Huge plumes of smoke can be seen for miles around and the firefighters are expected to be on the scene for a long time.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said seven fire engines have been sent from from Inverurie, Oldmeldrum, Kintore, Aberdeen and Insch.

An incident command unit and welfare vehicle are also in attendance.

Local senior officer David Rout said: "This is a very complex building which as presented us with a significant and challenging fire. Our firefighters are working hard to extinguish the blaze."

Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service crews are also at the scene although no injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is yet be determined.

Lethenty Mill Furniture, owned by Allan Fyfe, has been producing furniture and hand-made kitchens using traditional woodworking techniques for the past 37 years.

Mr Fyfe also runs furniture making evening classes within his workshops at Lethenty Mill, passing on craft skills and woodworking knowledge to others.
