A maternity hospital where inspectors found bloody mattresses and dirty cots has made "significant progress".

Aberdeen Maternity Hospital was severely criticised in a series of reports published in 2012, 2013 and 2014 by the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate (HEI).

Inspectors found mattresses stained with blood, dusty operating theatres and dirty wheelchairs and cots.

The hospital, which handles around 5000 births every year, was ordered to make improvements.

In a newly published report, HEI inspectors said: "While there is no room for complacency, we acknowledge that there has been significant progress made over the last two years.

"The patient environment and patient equipment were clean."

HEI has told Aberdeen Maternity Hospital to ensure staff follow procedures for dealing with spills and disposing of used linen.
