The new River Don crossing in Aberdeen is set to be named the Diamond Bridge.

The £22.3m bridge was named in honour of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee by local schoolchildren.

Aberdeen city councillors will be asked to formally approve the name at a meeting on Tuesday.

Work started on the bridge in August 2014 but the project has been hit by a series of delays.

It was expected to open in late 2015, but problems with bad weather, difficulties rerouting underground utilities, and the death of a construction worker means the bridge is now anticipated to open in late spring.

Other names considered for the scheme included Gordon Bridge, St Machar's Bridge, Marischal Bridge and Third Don.

The project has popularly been referred to as the Third Don Crossing, although the Diamond Bridge will actually be the eighth span across the Don.
