A woman has died and a man has been taken to hospital after falling from cliffs in Aberdeenshire.

The emergency services were called to Kinneff near Inverbervie at 1.20am on Friday.

The woman's death is being treated as unexplained and an investigation is under way.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Officers attended the scene at Kinneff at about 1.20am on Friday to reports of an unexplained death.

"Another person has been taken to hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries."

The RNLI were called in to help with the incident, which began as a search for a missing person.

A spokesman for Stonehaven RNLI added: "We were asked to go down and assist in the search for a missing person - we were really there to give them some light on the cliffs."
