A man died after falling overboard from a fishing boat off the coast of Shetland on Thursday.

The King Challenger, a UK-registered fishing vessel, was in waters south west of Scalloway when the incident happened.

The UK Coastguard was called out at 9.45am after the ship sent a mayday signal.

A spokeswoman for the Martime and Coastguard Agency said: "At 9.45am on Thursday, June 24, the UK Coastguard received a mayday broadcast from a 21-metre fishing vessel reporting a person overboard.

"The person was recovered from the water by crew of the fishing vessel.

"UK Coastguard helicopter based at Sumburgh was sent the location.

"The casualty was winched on board and has been flown to Bain Gilbert Hospital.

"Lerwick Coastguard Rescue Team prepared a safe landing area for the helicopter."

The man later died in hospital and his next of kin are being informed. His identity has not been released.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has now launched an investigation into the man's death.

A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal following the investigation.
