A gas leak led to the closure of the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road for more than an hour on Monday.

The A96 was shut in both directions following the leak on a stretch of the road between Elgin and Lhanbryde.

The leak was reported around 1.30pm and police assisted with the road closure as engineers were called out, a Police Scotland spokeswoman said.

Shortly before 4pm, the road was reopened.

A statement from gas main operators SGN said earlier: "We have engineers on site carrying out an emergency repair to our gas main near the A96, on the outskirts of Elgin.

"A section of the road near Moss of Barmuckity has been temporarily closed. A signed diversion route is in place.

"We're working closely with the police and (road managers) BEAR Scotland to minimise disruption as much as possible.

"We're aware this is a busy route and will be doing everything we can to complete this work as quickly as possible."
