A man has been airlifted to hospital after falling ill on a North Sea oil platform.

The man was taken from the facility around 100 miles from Lerwick by a coastguard helicopter on Wednesday afternoon.

He was taken to Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick, Shetland, for medical treatment.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokeswoman added: "We were contacted at around 10.30am this morning regarding a person who required medical attention.

"The coastguard helicopter based at Sumburgh attended and Lerwick coastguard rescue team manned the landing site.

"He was taken to Gilbert Bain Hospital for medical attention."
